If I Could Return

If I could return

Some days seem more significant than others. Every day (except when the clocks change) has twenty-four hours in it, but occasionally one day stands out from the crowd.

I had the opportunity to share some of my songs with someone I’ve known for over a decade and revered for much longer; Graham Kendrick. For those of you who don’t know the name, you will (if you’ve been in church) know his songs. Graham is one of the forefathers of modern worship music; he saved the nation from enduring decades of organ-led hymns with little variation.

I spoke to Graham over lunch about significant works in his life and ministry and he told me about coast-to-coast prayer walks, being involved in the first Spring Harvest and composing music for the March For Jesus events in the 1980’s. As we were talking, I felt a strong conviction that I should look to get songs of worship into new spaces. So many people occupy the middle of the road, so many composers are trying to get their songs on the same platform and there can be an unhealthy spirit of competition within church and worship circles.

So I decided to revisit a wild idea that started brewing last year...

If I Could Return joins Take Me Back, Home and You Never Give Up as another composition for a musical production of The Lost Son. In the busyness of sharing weekly releases and establishing new Homegrown playlists, the idea of developing a 2-man touring production had been put on the shelf. However, my passion has been re-ignited to create an impacting show that is delivered by a narrator and a singer, along with backing tracks and video projection. The performance will combine a compelling narrative and song which both tell the story and draw the audience into worship… essentially filling a space few others are attempting to occupy.

Today is a day that can be significant for all of us. There’s an opportunity to say YES to what God has in store for us and to say NO to the mediocrity that the world expects us to abide by.
