Matthew Lunders - No Place Too Far

The Story Behind the Song

I’m sitting at my desk, staring at a map on the wall, seeing a lot of lines that need to be crossed.

Let me rewind my story. Our church was beginning a study on the people and places in the book of Acts, so I sat down with my Bible and my guitar in hopes of writing a song that would connect our sermons, small groups, and singing. The roadmap of Acts is laid out early on: “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

The first idea that struck me was that there was no place too far for them to share the news about Jesus. That meant more than just crossing physical distances, but also crossing the more difficult cultural, societal, and educational barriers. But it didn’t stop at just reaching the “other” with Christ’s message, but also training and sending them, too.

My city hosts a very transient population, and people from more than 100 nations have been part of our church. I have been honored to witness radical unity across all races because Jesus has reconciled us to God and each other through the cross. Our diversity serves as a constant reminder to us that God is sending people from everywhere to everywhere as the same Holy Spirit works in and through all of us.

So as I stare at the map on my wall, I see the hometowns of so many of my brothers and sisters. I see so many places where the message of Jesus has taken me to. And I see so many lines left to cross.

Keep running the race with endurance, because our course is not done yet, and there’s No Place Too Far.
