THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
I love Psalm 63. I love the words of this particular passage of scripture. I love how David expresses himself to God. He uses wonderful imagery to describe his relationship with God such as: seeking Him early; thirsting for Him; remembering Him at night and all the troubles He had delivered him out of; hiding underneath the shadow of His wings, abiding in His love and being satisfied by His presence.
There are times when I cannot articulate through speech what I can express through song. I guess maybe it’s because once you add a melody to something, it somehow has the ability to reach deep into your heart and bring out the worship that is in there. Music is such a powerful tool that has been given to us by God to aid us in our worship of Him.
When I wrote God, You Are My God I wanted to express my heart to God and sing to Him about how much I loved Him, needed Him, longed for Him and desired Him. I completely identified with the way David portrayed the intimate relationship He had with God and so I used his words. For me, they were what I needed to say to God at that moment in time.
I have since come to learn that this Psalm was written when David fled to the wilderness, having run away from his son Absalom, who was trying to kill him and take his throne. It is in the wilderness that He worshipped. The silence of the wilderness did not silence his worship. There have been many times where I’ve felt like I’ve been in a wilderness, unsure of what is happening in my life and what my next steps should be. It is at those moments that I have often sat at my piano (which was passed down to me from my great grandmother) and sung God, You are My God. It has been a huge source of encouragement to me and has reminded me that while God is every believer’s God, He is my God. He is with me, close to me and intimately involved in every aspect of my life. What a reason to worship!
