THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
In the autumn of 2019, our church worship team gathered together to seek God and hear his heart for the coming months. God spoke to us that there would be significant times as we gathered to worship Him, but there was also a fresh challenge to lay our lives down again and put him first in our lives.
It’s no surprise to hear this challenge. The book of psalms, the songbook of the bible, begins in exactly this way. It begins with an individual: his conduct, his choices, his priorities. If we want to see God do great things amongst us as a people, in our local churches and in our gatherings together, then we must get our personal lives right first.
Over the days that followed, this song formed as I worshiped God on my own and honestly said “Here I am use me, I’ve said it before but it’s not always how I live”. This process of being changed from glory to glory may feel like a slow one at times, but the more I align my way to God’s way the more he will use me for his glory.
The chorus is based on a line at the end of Psalm 139. After considering God’s infinite knowledge and glimpsing his immeasurable goodness, the psalmist realises his only response can be to offer his life completely to God again. “See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting”.
