THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
If the gospel is life giving and vital to everyone, Christians should be leaving everything to make sure everyone can hear it. Sure I knew that and even taught it in my church's middle-school, but did I really live that out?
I think, as an American Christian, I spent a great deal of time focussing on my relationship with God like it was some secret formula to keep to myself. I would spend time reading and seeking the affirmation and love of a God, but I'd spend little to no time thinking about others who might have those same needs.
I spent some time in a dark city, at least that's how it felt to me. I was there to help with a new church as their worship leader. Everywhere I looked I saw people being oppressed by lies that others claimed would help them and give them freedom, and I wouldn't feel anything. How could I not feel anything?
One day, I was challenged to write a song based on the word "Compassion". It wasn't even ten minutes before I was slumped over in my room, alone with my cold, hard heart. I remember writing "Your love is like a river and my heart is like a dam" and realizing just how calloused I'd become.
The love and grace I have been shown is not meant to be bottled up for a rainy day. It is a life giving ointment for all. It meets our needs, covers our wounds, and gives us the hope to carry on. So, Let it flow.
