Proverbs 3:5 & 6

‘Make My Path Straight’ is itself a fulfillment of my conviction since conversion, to trust my walk with the Lord to God’s faithful guidance. Seeking to live out Proverbs 3 for my 57-year Christian odyssey - experiencing failure as well as victory - has over the years sharpened my understanding of the wisdom scriptures.

Seeking answers to the slipping away of our Judeo/Christian heritage led me to a deeper walk and the reviving of writing skills many years after an award-winning career in industrial editing and marketing that began in the Sixties. Unexpectedly, in 2014 I began writing a book reflecting on my experiences as a Christian ‘man in the street’, my journey of over half a century as a ‘watchman on the walls’, through a time of social, political and spiritual turmoil.

Far less expected was my inspirational re-writing of a classic popular song of the 20th Century in2017, followed by eight more, all with biblical lyrics, by Spring 2019.

For someone with no musical skills, this was one of the biggest surprises of my fairly adventurous and eventful life as a Christian. The songs came, all unbidden, with no previous ambition to write lyrics. I felt it was imperative for them to be heard, not filed on my laptop.

But how could a lyrics writer, who cannot sing or play an instrument convert his untutored work into the reality of recording?

Two years of closed doors, praying for leads, writing to worship-leaders and publishers, and many an online search seemed only to be anything but a straight path.

The breakthrough came when I was drawn to visit CRE Manchester in March.

At the Ministry of Music stand Nicky Whyman accepted a selection of the lyrics. Nicky felt led to do a demo of one of the songs on her iPhone, which I then received with much delight. The connection was at last made as a collaboration for further songs has now yielded ‘Make My Path Straight’ with more to follow with Nicky and other Homegrown Worship musicians in the next few months.
