THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
Not so long ago I was reading an amazing book by Peter Scazzero that was recommended to me by a friend. It’s called Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. The book is about spiritual transformation and interlinks growing in emotional health with the process of changing and growing in spiritual maturity. For years I believed that emotions would only ever lead me astray and that I should ignore them. But after reading this book I realised that emotions are God-given signals for what is happening in my soul.
The book also has a chapter on journeying through walls; these being defined as traumatic events that have caused believers have become ‘stuck’ in a season of their faith walk where they end up questioning God, the church and themselves. I realised that I had (and have had) some walls in my life that I needed to journey through, and this is what inspired Will You Let Me.
The song is a cry from God’s heart to allow Him to break through our walls in order to bring us into a place of liberty, emotional health and spiritual maturity. So often believers get stuck at that traumatic event, that horrible situation, that painful memory, that shameful past and never get beyond it. There is also the tendency to question: “Where was God when all of this was going on?” Well, He was there.
Since reading the book I have realised that in order for us to become our true selves in Christ, we need to journey through our walls. We can only do this with the guidance and help of the Holy Spirit who wholly loves us. I love that David, the Psalmist, was very much in touch with his emotions and had to journey through some of his own difficult walls. Just look at all the songs that he composed that describe that process! Today we can relate to him because he penned his feelings and his responses to God in various situations. This is why Will You Let Me is not only a song for me - it’s a song for you.
