THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
We have natural eyes that can comprehend the beauty and glory of God by beholding what is around us in the creation (Romans 1:19-20). However, we have been given “spiritual eyes” as well, to comprehend Him in other ways that our natural eyes cannot (Ephesians 1:18). These “eyes of our heart” can gaze on and comprehend the glory and goodness of the uncreated God.
If the eyes of our heart can “see” God, then the more we lock eyes with Him, the more we will experience Him. And the more we experience Him, the more we love Him - because He is so beautiful.
Therefore, one of the main ways we can grow in love for God is simply to behold Him.
We see David in Psalm 27:4, consumed by this desire to abide with God where He is and to see Him as He is. David knew that if He dwelled where God dwelled, if He built His home inside of God’s home, then he would see God.
To do this, David cultivated a lifestyle of abiding in God’s presence by meditating on God and getting rid of what was clouding his vision.
God is inviting us to do the same - to abide with Him and to see Him as He is.
