After my first husband died in 1982, the Lord began inspiring me to write songs. “The Missionary” was the first song that the Lord gave me. It was written about the life of my young husband who was an insurance salesman but who had a missionary’s heart. The verses tell the story of a man who loved the Lord and sought His leading in his life. Each morning, he would pray and ask God what He would have him do that day.

I remember writing the lyrics in about 45 minutes before going to a friend’s house for dinner. The song came to me easily, but I thought it needed a little piano part for the intro. I asked God to help me with that and He gave me the piano part that you hear in the introduction, and I would never change it. It was the first song that I wrote, the first song I shared in February 2023 on social media and the first song on the list that Homegrown Worship selected for our recording project. None of this was intentional on my part.

We’re not all called to go to far-off places to serve as missionaries, but I believe we can be missionaries right where we are. When we go to the grocery store or to work or to school, anywhere we are we just share the love of God. Perhaps God will use this song to inspire others to become missionaries.
