THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
I had been talking to Pastor Eric Bapetel, a wonderful friend and pastor (in Johannesburg, South Africa), for a long while about Homegrown Worship and the possibility of introducing the concept to some writers, artists, worship leaders and churches out there since it’s my homeland.
He was very keen to know more and told me that he had actually written a couple of songs a long while back. He sent me a voice note of an unfinished song on WhatsApp and the song was about bringing in the harvest. I suggested working on it, which I did and titled it “I Will Go”.
I came up with some ideas and to cut a long story short, Pastor Eric and I decided that it would be great to release the song as one of my singles through the Handpicked Playlist. I sent it to Andy Baker, the Chief Enthusiast of Homegrown Worship, and he felt that it needed a little more work. We got together and rewrote some parts, and decided that this song would really work in a church setting. So we changed the title to “We Will Go” and the emphasis to a response to the call of God to go out into all the world and preach the good news of Jesus.
The song was recorded and what is so amazing to me is that a song that was written years ago found its voice in the present day. It’s impacting people’s lives already. I feel so blessed to have been a co-writer on this and I pray that it will inspire people to share the love and kindness of a merciful God.
