THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
‘The Promise’ tells the story of the enduring promise of God to his people, as revealed through the epic journey of Israel in the Bible. It is a journey from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the promised land and is a foreshadowing of the promise offered to all people today through Jesus Christ..
I was inspired to write the song by the dramatic prophetic revelation in Ezekiel 16, in which the history of Israel is retold, beginning with Israel personified as an abandoned child. Each of the three verses of the song tells a different phase of the story. The first verse looks back to God choosing Israel and rescuing her with signs and wonders. The second verse tells of Israel falling away from her first love to a broken existence. And the third verse looks forward to the restoration of Israel and the Church under Jesus Christ, drawing inspiration from Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son.
Throughout the story, one theme endures - the promise of God, paraphrased in the song as “I am yours and you are mine.” God is faithful and He keeps His promises. The song returns again and again to this promise “I am yours and you are mine” – the same promise which is offered today to all who accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
“Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.” (Ez. 16:60)
