I was leading a weekly Bible study for some teenagers in my church. One weeknight when I arrived at their school, they all apologized for being too busy and needing to attend a poetry night instead of the Bible study. Thankfully, one invited me to go along. That evening inspired me to try my hand at slam poetry for our upcoming Easter service, and the spoken word in this song is what came out.

When I later shared it with Nick Law - then chief song selector of Homegrown Worship - he recommended the poem get connected to a song. To me, the right fit needed to be a song of invitation to follow Jesus. So I fleshed out a chorus idea that I’d had years before and drew heavily on the words of Jesus for the verses.

Jesus meets us where we are, but then calls us to movement. If you have not made the choice to join his movement, my prayer is that you will do that today.
