THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
There are two main reasons I was so excited to record God in Man for the Handpicked playlist:
- From my hundreds of songs, my wife says it is her favorite one that she has heard so far. (I love you, darling.)
- My journey to this playlist started with Christmas.
I met Homegrown Worship’s Chief Enthusiast, Andy Baker, about a decade ago during Graham Kendrick’s “Dreaming of a Holy Night” tour. That Nativity-themed album remains one of my holiday favorites because of its great wordplay in trying to help us grasp what happened in the events surrounding the birth of Jesus. Kendrick’s approach served as inspiration to me years later in writing this song during an Advent season when I was left alone to run our holiday services… which gave me a little room to experiment.
Often when a Christmas carol starts in a church meeting, my brain switches from focusing on worship and mission to just joining a sing-along. So I wanted to write a song that could flow in a music set and that could help me look to God and look to others. As I re-read the narrative in Luke’s Gospel, the story of the shepherds gave me that example. After seeing God’s Word fulfilled in a newborn baby, the shepherds told the people of the city and praised God. Like them, I want to behold the wonder of God becoming human — leading to praising God and telling others.
