THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
Written after two of the most miserable days of many a long year, with 20 hours of lashing storms and the dark and dismal clouds sitting right around, blocking the view of our glorious Shropshire hills. After two weeks of good and ill and a fierce tug-of-war with the enemy without and within. I should have slept soundly, made the most of that blessed extra hour, but my clock would not let me, nagging pain and doubts darkened my soul. After exhaustion snatched for me a few winks of sleep I woke early with my limbs aching but a glint of radiant sunlight through the heavy curtains. How could I not get right up? I did and I greeted the dawn.
Instead of the grim TV news I rejoiced with Carol Klein in her garden, a bit of heaven in Devon. As I turned the box off a few lines made me stop, pick up my pen and write this song of God's unchanging grace which Ken Spence's melody has now brought to life. It was an unexpected blessing when, in September, as Lockdown eased momentarily, Ken visited my home and sang it as we worshipped with friends in our garden.
