THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
“When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm.” - Luke 8:24 NLT
My favourite Bible account is of Jesus calming the storm. Knowing I’m held by the God who can calm any storm brings me a peace the world cannot and does not give.
In this song, water represents danger and darkness represents fear. Both are drawing in, closer and closer, and the protagonist is exhausted from trying to fight for themself. They don’t yet trust that God can calm the storm. At rock bottom, in the midst of doubting God, but crying out to Him, they look up and see Jesus walking towards them on the water with arms outstretched. They soar above the storm, finding refuge and even beauty when they give their fear to Jesus.
“He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armour and protection.” - Psalm 91:4 NLT
At some of the lowest points in my life I’ve been most aware of God’s presence. When I lack the strength to stand, I’m reminded that He’s the pillar holding me up. He loved me at my darkest, and I try every day to love Him with all I have, but even when I fail, He’s there, holding me. He calms the storm to a whisper and gives me His peace.
